Core Functionality

SteelEye Protection Suite combines unique application-aware monitoring of the entire IT stack (servers, networks, operating systems, applications, data, and storage) with innovative replication techniques and automated and manual intervention capabilities to ensure that your mission-critical applications and data are always available.

Efficient, flexible, and easy-to-manage replication reduces TCO and increases ROI.

Leading-edge yet simple-to-manage replication capabilities boost ROI by protecting server workloads at a fraction of the cost of expensive array-based replication solutions.

SPS supports:

  • Replication of data volumes that are part of a standard shared storage cluster or a multi-site cluster.
  • Automatic handling of changing replication sources in the local cluster.
  • Synchronous and asynchronous replication of only changed data.
  • Graphical configuration and monitoring of mirrored volumes, simultaneous creation and re-sync of multiple mirrors, and access to source data during mirror creation and re-sync.
  • Multiple replication targets, which can span any combination of local and remote sites. Local data recovery is assured by continuous backup within the local data center, while asynchronous remote data replication protects against local disasters.
  • Unsurpassed replication speeds across WANs regardless of latency. SPS achieves over 90% bandwidth utilization without the need for hardware accelerators or compression devices. For even greater throughput, SPS offers an integrated compression engine that can be tuned to one of nine compression levels. To manage the accelerated network traffic, per-mirror replication throttles (aka “speed limits”) give administrators complete control over cross-site bandwidth usage.

Continuous monitoring, flexible rewind, and simple failover ensure data integrity and availability.

SPS can automatically detect critical resource failure/communication loss across LANs, WANs, and cloud/virtual environments to ensure superior application availability and data integrity.

You can set policies that determine what the system should do when a fault is detected, including:

  • Automatically restart or correct the condition.
  • Automatically failover one or more components to the recovery environment in the local cluster.

SPS also provides powerful tools to simplify manual intervention, including:

  • “Any Point in Time Rewind” – The minute a data integrity issue is detected, the administrator can mount the replicated data on a backup volume and then move backward and forward through the data stream via time stamps or other user-defined bookmarks until the optimal set of data is constructed. That data can then be quickly placed into service and normal operations can resume.
  • “Panic Button” – The administrator can perform a rapid manual failover to the remote site in the event of a complete failure of the local cluster.

Wizard-based disaster recovery virtually eliminates downtime.

In the event of a catastrophic failure, such as a loss of the primary site, SPS provides an easy-to-use Disaster Recovery Wizard for rapid return to normal operations.

The SPS Disaster Recovery Wizard guides users through each step of the recovery process, including:

  • Failing over and bringing each component of the production system(s) into service in the recovery environment.
  • Building a new temporary dataset from the backup using timestamps or other bookmarks.
  • Validating the dataset for consistency and then looping back until the optimal dataset is built. An intelligent binary search technique speeds the rebuilding process to optimize recovery time.
  • Ensuring that the recovery environment is always in-sync with the production environment, regardless of distance or time of day.
  • Re-synchronizing the original production data with changes that were applied within the recovery environment prior to failback.
  • Placing the recovered data back into service on the production server and resuming normal business operations.
