It’s Time To Demystify Quorums

As I read through the SQL Server forums and field questions from IT pros, it surprises me how many are simply off-put by the mention of the word quorum. It’s a six-letter word treated like a part of our collective four letter vocabulary.

Quorum Defined: A voting mechanism to ensure correct ownership of cluster resources.A “quorum” in an IT-sense is simply a voting mechanism to ensure the correct ownership of a cluster. Most commonly, it’s used in conjunction with Always On (both Failover Cluster Instances and Availability Groups), Hyper-V Clusters and all Windows Server Failover Clusters.

The key isn’t to know where to use them it’s how to use them. I put together a short 30 minute webcast that dives into the a variety of quorum types most commonly used — including the pros, cons, and illustrations to demystify quorums and, dare I say, make them easy to understand. I also suggest tuning in after the 30 minute mark — we had some great questions come in as part of the Q&A.

The transaction log is one of the most critical, yet often misunderstood components of SQL Server. From out of control log growth to very long startup times, problems with the transaction log can cause a lot of pain. In this session, we’ll look at how the transaction log works and how to optimize it’s performance. You’ll learn how to determine the right settings for maximum throughput, and what to do when things get out of control.

Abstract: SQL Server Defaults Suck!!!

By Kevin Boles

If you just click next-next-next and think you have a good-to-go SQL Server THINK-AGAIN!! 🙂 There are umpteen things you just GOTTA change right out of the box if you want your potentially very expensive and always precious SQL Server resource to perform and behave optimally. This session will cover a laundry list from data and log file growth factors to Windows power settings and many useful items in between.

Unit Testing SQL Server

In the nearly 20 years I have been working with SQL Server, most of that as an independent consultant, I can count two hands the number of clients I have come across that had ANY database tests constructed. I can count on TWO FINGERS the number of them that had repeatable database tests. Even the most ardent Agile/Scrum/pick-your-new-and-shiny-development-mantra shops hardly ever do anything more than wave a magic wand at testing the database, because it can be REALLY HARD to do and do correctly. In this session we will cover examples of why repeatable database testing is CRITICALLY important and then examine both a free and a low-cost commercial product to ease the pain and improve developer efficiency.

High Availability in Under an Hour

That was my challenge. My client had a mission critical SQL Server Replication Distributor that couldn’t be down for more than an hour. Their highly transactional healthcare application demanded high performance. They wanted me to add high availability protection. SIOS DataKeeper was the solution. I used SIOS DataKeeper and a few simple Powershell scripts to implement a high performance SANLess cluster in under an hour. Learn how I met this challenge in this on-demand webinar.
